Rose's Promise

"Titanic" was not just the largest cinematic event of 1998. In many ways it was one of the largest mass emotional events of the year, touching people across nations and continents.

"Titanic" is a romance, an epic, a special effects tour de force, a pageant of sets and costume, but above all a film about surviving against all the odds. At the darkest hour of the movie, Jack Dawson, played by Leonardo Di Caprio, tells Kate Winslet's character, Rose, that she must never give up hope:

Jack: You must promise me that you'll survive, that you won't give up, no matter what happens, no matter how hopeless. Promise me now, Rose, and never let go of that promise.
Rose: I promise.
Jack: Never let go.
Rose: I will never let go, Jack. I'll never let go.

Stark text on a screen can't do justice to the power of these words at the climax of the film. But I hope those of you who have seen "Titanic" can think back to that scene, and those who haven't, might be tempted to go out and rent it (or better still, find a cinema showing it again!)

No matter how hard it gets remember Rose's Promise.
